Wrinkle Relaxers: Botox vs Dysport
While both Botox and Dysport are sometimes used to treat muscle spasms from neurological disorders and other medical conditions, they’re more widely known for the treatment and prevention of wrinkles. Both injectables are derived from the botulinum toxin which is safe in small amounts. The differences lie in the potency of trace proteins, which can make one more effective than the other. Both are highly popular aesthetic treatments at Concordia Star Medical.
Overall, these have many similarities. The botulinum toxin is used to relax the muscles that cause frown lines and other overactive muscles of the face, like forehead lines and crow’s feet. Both Botox and Dysport have been used for years and have a high safety profile. Both Dysport and Botox must be injected every 3-6 months.
The main difference between these two injectables is that Botox has been approved for treating forehead lines and crow’s feet in addition to globular lines (forehead wrinkles and frown lines), while Dysport has been approved by the FDA for only treating globular lines. It is also only recommended for moderate to severe cases. Dysport is also a smaller-sized molecule so the unit measurement is different than Botox.
